Factors for growth in the past
Because it was located on the outskirts of the city, Pimple Saudagar was not always in the limelight. It was a village, and under-developed for a long time. The residents were poor peasants and farmers involving themselves in agriculture and wood carving. Public services were not good in these parts either. But thanks to the industrialisation of Pune, the city expanded rapidly in the late 1990s, spreading itself to areas like Pimple Saudagar. Accessibility to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway via the Katraj-Dehu Bypass Road in 2001, was a major factor responsible for the development that followed in Pimple Saudagar. Later, with the construction of IT parks and other office spaces in Hinjewadi, this locality saw a lot of residential activity with a large influx of property investment.
Major challenges
Though Pimple Saudagar is situated on flat land, and has the Pavana River flowing to its north, which is a major water source, the area is lately facing some water scarcity. Shortage of water has been noticed in many residential areas here, mostly owing to the increasing population. Since the auto drivers in this area don’t run by the meter and instead charge unreasonable amounts of money, most residents have resorted to buying their own vehicles. This has led to an increase in traffic and pollution in the region.
